Happy holidays!

I know I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately, but what a year it’s been. Thanks to everyone who’s supported me over the last twelve months, whether that’s been through buying a basket, coming along to a workshop, or just following along and giving encouragement. Being self-employed, every year is a bit different, so I thought I’d do a quick round up of all the highlights from 2025.

I have to start with becoming a mum! It’s been a wild and wonderful few months since baby Cameron arrived. Weaving is on pause for the moment, but we’re surrounded by baskets at home and Cam seems to love his willow rattle (thanks @anna.liebmann.basketweaver 💛) so I’m hoping he’ll be a big fan when the time comes for me to get back to work.

As for basket making, I spent the first part of the year carrying on my winter residency at Elliott’s. It was a dream having so much space to work in, with the sun streaming through the big front window and people always popping by. Thanks @jess_elliott_dennison for a magic few months in your studio.

Other highlights were:
Making giant fish lanterns with @marthaellisart and a community group in Horncliffe, for their annual salmon procession 🐟
Teaching beginner basket making classes @oldbarnedinburgh and @thefreecompanysco

I know I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately, but what a year it’s been. Thanks to everyone who’s supported me over the last twelve months, whether that’s been through buying a basket, coming along to a workshop, or just following along and giving encouragement. Being self-employed, every year is a bit different, so I thought I’d do a quick round up of all the highlights from 2025.

A trio of zarzos drying in the sun 🌞 the shadows they cast are one of my favourite things about these baskets.

The sun isn’t the only thing brightening up my work bench today - I was given some gorgeous home grown flowers from a very lovely customer who popped round to collect something this morning. I am lucky!

It’s always exciting learning new skills and these have been on my wish list for a long time. I’m brimming with ideas for bringing scalloming and fitching in to my work, thanks to a wonderful lesson last week from @anna.liebmann.basketweaver

For any non-basket makers reading, scalloming is a method of attaching the stakes (or uprights) to a frame / hoop, laying the foundation for the next stage of weaving. Fitching involves twisting two willow rods tightly round each other in the gaps between the stakes, securing their position and creating an elegant, open structure.

It’s always exciting learning new skills and these have been on my wish list for a long time. I’m brimming with ideas for bringing scalloming and fitching in to my work, thanks to a wonderful lesson last week from @anna.liebmann.basketweaver

A swoop of swallows 🪶

I’ve really enjoyed making each of these little birds unique, using a random weave to sculpt the bodies and playing with different wing positions to create a sense of movement.

Swallows will always remind me of long summer evenings in the garden with my parents, so it was extra special to have my mum and dad at the opening of the exhibition last weekend.

‘Watercolour & Willow’ will be on until 27th July at Waterston House in Aberlady, Wed-Sun, 10am-5pm. For anyone interested, the swallows (and baskets) are available to buy direct from the gallery @socaberlady - collection only

Started the day with a quick tour of the willow bed, to talk about the steps involved in getting this versatile material ready for weaving.

Then we headed to the hayloft, the perfect setting for a day of basket making. Of course the lunch was a highlight, with lots of beautiful ingredients fresh from the farm, though I was too busy enjoying it to get any photos!

It’s about 60cm tall, ideal as an umbrella stand or perhaps a vase for dried flowers, grasses or branches.

Happy to share that this, along with a few other one-off pieces, is now on display at the Number Four Gallery in St Abbs.

Soaking up my last week in the Elliott’s studio before the wonderful @jess_elliott_dennison officially returns for her Spring Series of cookery demonstrations and lunches at the beginning of April.

I’m so, so lucky to have been able to spend the last five months here on Sciennes Road, hosting workshops, welcoming customers, meeting passers by and weaving to my heart’s content. On top of that, I’ll miss the cosy green walls and sunshine streaming in 🌞 it has really set the bar for my next workspace!

Having packed in as many baskets and bundles of willow as I could since I arrived, I’ll be clearing space at the end of this week for Jess to display her beautiful new collection of edible treats, ceramics, textiles and kitchenware. I’m pleased to say this will include a few pieces of mine too.

April will mark the start of a new chapter for me, going back to working from home and preparing for some exciting plans ahead - more on that soon! My baskets will still be available to purchase, so watch this space and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions :)

I’ve been looking forward to seeing these ever since they were installed last September. The exhibition will be on til 21st April - if you’re near, don’t miss it!

Today 🌞

A simple, flared design with golden green Dicky Meadows set off against buff willow.

The elegant shape was inspired by the first laundry basket I ever made with @anna.liebmann.basketweaver a few years ago.

With built-in handles and a foot border added for longevity, it was made to last. I like to think whoever it goes home to, it’ll add a bit of joy to laundry day for many years to come 🧺

It was a particularly colourful batch of Brittany Green from @musgrovewillows last year, with lots of deep red and purple tones in amongst the green. With a spiral of white against the rich brown of steamed willow, the whole thing reminds me of a chocolate Swiss roll.

After a gentle, frosty start to the year, I’m looking forward to getting more willow in the tank and welcoming more lovely folk to the studio to weave their own creations. This is one of my favourite small projects and great for beginners.

Being the first of its kind here in East Lothian, we weren’t sure how busy it would be, but what a great turn out. It was wonderful to meet so many people of all ages interested in basket weaving, willow sculpting and cordage making.

For those of us who spend most of our time working in isolation, these kinds of events are a real treat, a chance to make connections, share tips and ideas, and an important reminder of what an incredibly supportive bunch the basketmaking community is.

Huge thanks to @jillygreig_myweavingjourney for putting so many hours into organising this - you’re a star!

We’re already talking about doing it again next year, so watch this space.

Swifts & swallows in the making 🪶

I used to faff about with string to hold the curve, but securing the wing tips in a wooden block as you weave makes it sooooo much easier to control the shape. I can’t remember where I first saw this being done but thank you to whoever taught me this trick - thought I’d pass it on.

Something a bit different 🐑

As well as basket making, I love to draw and paint, especially (as I discovered recently) farm themed murals! Here’s a little something I did as a present for my nephew’s 5th birthday 🎂

The rain’s been good for everything this summer, not just the willow - grass, nettles, thistles and all sorts have been springing up through the gaps. Spent a good morning clearing weeds and only got stung a little bit by a monster nettle (through my gloves!) 🧤

After a disastrous first attempt at growing my own willow a couple of years ago, I’m very, very happy to see that the bed I planted earlier this year is doing well. Visited recently for the first time in a few weeks and some of it’s almost as tall as me!

Thanks again to everyone who visited me at the Makers Market @hugoburgefoundation over the last couple of days. It’s always a pleasure chatting about willow and meeting people who appreciate baskets, especially in such a beautiful setting and with so many other artists and makers around.

For anyone who didn’t make it to the event, here’s how my stall was looking yesterday morning before everyone arrived. A few of the bigger pieces have gone and I’m almost out of hanging baskets 🍋 (thanks everyone who bought these!) but I’ve still got a variety of baskets available in different shapes and sizes. What a week @tearup.fest ❤️

I’m so, so lucky to have spent three days learning from Anne Mette @hjornholmpil, weaving a willow backpack and bonding over baskets with such a great group of people.

It was pretty surreal and very inspiring. Hundreds of basketmakers working alongside each other on different projects, with so many incredible tutors - all in a beautiful, blustery field in Staffordshire.

The weekend was amazing too, with even more people arriving for workshops, talks, demos and displays.

Huge thanks Eddie @blithfieldwillow for making it happen 🙌
